SHAWNEE, Kan. - In two weeks, the public can weigh in on the overpopulation of deer at Shawnee Mission Park.

The Johnson County Parks and Recreation commissioners will meet at 6:30 p.m. on May 13 at the Shawnee Civic Centre, 13817 Johnson Drive.

A decision on the deer herd will be made at the end of May at the earliest.

According to the Shawnee Dispatch, the high deer population in the park has been a concern for several years. But last year the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks said the park had the highest concentration of deer per square mile in the state, possibly even in the country.  There are reportedly 200 deer per square mile.

Some Shawnee residents are concerned the deer herd could increase cases of Lyme disease.

The park district created a biodiversity committee to address several issues including the deer overpopulation.

The committee will share their policy at the public meeting.  Shawnee residents will have three minutes to give the board their input during the public comments portion of the meeting.
