OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Police will be working instead of celebrating New Year's Eve in order to make sure the roads are safe.
Wednesday night and early Thursday morning Overland Park police will conduct a DUI Saturation Patrol. It will begin at 11 p.m. and end at 3 a.m.
A special team of officers will patrol the streets, looking for drivers who are impaired or violating traffic laws.
Police say the goal of the saturation patrol is to reduce alcohol-related accidents and to discourage people from getting behind the wheel after they’ve been drinking.A first time DUI conviction can cost a person as much as $10,000.One alternative for people planning to drink on New Year’s Eve is the
Holiday Cab program. Yellow Cab will offer free rides home, though there will be a charge if the fare goes above $25.
