INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - Churches and other non-profits suffering in the recession are looking for the Fourth of July to provide a big boom in money.

For the first time the City of Independence is making fireworks sales legal. More than 40 non-profit groups applied for permits. They approved 12 locations.

New Covenant Church is set up on 40 Highway near Lee’s Summit Road.

“If we could make $1,000, $2,000 that would be good for us,” says Joe Nicola.

In these tough economic times they are hoping to raise enough money for mission trips to South America. They decided to take a chance on a fireworks stand.

“With the recession going on we don't know exactly what the turnout will be here at the fireworks stand,” says Nicola.

Just down the road Center Place Restoration, a private kindergarten through 12 school, is hoping to raise money for its athletic department.

“Rather than just donating money to some other cause it's something that they can get fun out of themselves and enjoy,” says Kristi Regier, a parent with two kids at the school.

The school hopes to raise at least $3,000.
