INDEPENDENCE, Mo. – Members of the Community of Christ Temple in Independence came together for a prayer vigil Tuesday night.  They prayed for healing in the Mohler sexual abuse case.

Three of the six members of the Mohler family, accused of abusing children, are members of the faith.  Burrell Mohler Sr., David Mohler and Jared Mohler all served as lay priests in different Community of Christ churches.

Tuesday night, church members spent time in silent prayer and meditation.  Others came forward to light candles.  Church spokesperson Linda Booth said the members are hurting and facing a wide range of emotions.

“That’s why I think it’s even more critical that we come together in prayer to help us deal with those issues,” Booth said.  She added that those emotions ranged from hurt to anger and even doubt.

Pastor Brad Speaks said that prayer can help heal everyone.

“When the community is hurting,” Speaks said.  “We believe that God will speak to us through silence and through prayer."

Some in attendance said they knew one or more of the Mohlers.  Others said they just wanted to pray for all involved.

“It's a terrible tragedy for the offender family as well as, especially for the victim's family, and certainly they need prayer,” said church member Diane Kyser.
