Thought when you did this story, you were going to supply us a list of places to get properly filled propane tanks. Stores in Southern Johnson would help.

It would have been very helpful and informative if you told us more of what is happening on the Kansas side, and geven some examples/ recomendations regarding how to get the most for our money. Where do we get the best bargin? Are there campsites or other propane refil sites where we can have our tanks refilled instead of exchanging them? It just seems that if you spent a little less time on the outrage and told us how to do better, we would be more properly served.

I recently exchanged a Rhino tank at Lowes in Olathe. When I picked up the new tank, I thought it felt light. Another customer was exchanging a tank at the same time and complained that his was light too. We asked the clerk to give us both a different tank - the weight difference was dramatic. All four tanks were sealed and in the locked cage. There should be a scale to ensure you are getting what you pay for.

A viewer wrote to me saying that he likes to buy propane by the gallon. "Purchasing by the gallon avoids the mislabeling issue and is less expensive since you're not buying a convenience factor. Also, uless you keep a "spare" and run the tank completely dry, you're returnign useable fuel in the tank exchange program, making the exchange more expensive. For comparison, I just filled a completely empty tank for $13.31 at U-Haul Center of Olathe, 12540 S. Rogers Rd. I paid $3.09 per gallon for 4 gl. + $.95 for additional taxes. When refilling my tank in the past, I've purchased as little as slightly less than 3 gl., but not more than 4.25 gl. and paid the price per gallon each time," the consumer wrote. He then added he's simply a consumer not working for a propane distributor.

Depending on where you live, in Kansas City we just take our old bottle to Beagles and have them refilled. We have heard of some places only filling the takes up half way.
