GREENWOOD, Mo. – Monkey Island is now home to four alligators.
The alligators were rescued from California. They were among a group to be euthanized.
“We ended up with four out of 17 that they wanted us to take. So at least we know those won't be euthanized,” said Dana Savorelli.
Savorelli runs Monkey Island. It’s an animal sanctuary in Greenwood, Mo.
The alligators will be weighed, measured and most importantly they are micro chipped.
In November of 2007, surveillance video caught a woman stealing four of Savorelli's monkeys.
Two were found a year later. The case is still in court.
"Kind of like when they monkeys got stolen they were trying to say are those your monkey's or not? We're just trying to keep everything chipped now. You wouldn't think people would do any of this crazy stuff,” says Savorelli.
The alligators will live in a cage in a pond on the property. During the winter the alligators will live inside to keep them warm.
Monkey Island is home to many rescued animals including 50 monkeys, an ostrich, emus, donkey's lamas and some of the world’s most venomous snakes.
