OLATHE, Kan. –A man serving a 25 year sentence for a string of Lenexa apartment burglaries in 1997 is now charged with a sexual assault that happened three years earlier.
Johnson County prosecutors charged Anthony R. Martin, 44, with one count of rape and one count of aggravated criminal sodomy in connection to the 1994 rape of a woman inside her Lenexa apartment in the 13100 block of West 88th Street.
The then 22-year-old woman said she was raped at gunpoint on Aug. 19, 1994 by an unknown suspect who was waiting inside when she returned home.
Police say the suspect robbed her and fled in a vehicle stolen out of Kansas City, Mo.
No arrests were made at the time of the incident, but a Cold Case grant to the Johnson County Crime lab has allowed contemporary testing techniques to be applied to older unsolved cases.
A DNA profile was created and through further testing, Martin was identified as the suspect.
Martin was transferred from custody with the Kansas Department of Corrections to the Johnson County Adult Detention Center and was awaiting his first court appearance on the new charges.
