KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Five post offices in the Kansas City area remain on the list of branches under review for possible consolidation.

The U. S. Postal Service announced Friday that the list of retail stations and branches under review for possible consolidation has been updated. There are a total of 241 offices still under review.

Two of the five offices are in the Kansas City, Kan., at 3210 Fiberglass Road near Fairfax and the Packer station at 628 Kansas Ave.

In Missouri, the station at Metro North Mall, 400 NW Barry Road, and the offices at 7640 Prospect Ave., and 2657 Independence Ave., are also being reviewed.

The list is an update to a review process that began earlier this summer that that initially examined about 3,300 stations and branches in urban and suburban areas across the country.

The U.S. Postal Service is struggling with a sharp decline in mail. Unlike most federal agencies, the national mail system receives no tax subsidy for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.

The Postal Service reported a loss of $3.8 billion at the end of its 2009 fiscal year in October.

According to the U. S. Postal Service, new initiatives are being undertaken to build revenue, including Flat Rate Priority Mail pricing. If it fits in the box, it ships for one low price regardless of U.S. destination or weight. Another recent revenue building initiative introduced greeting cards to 500 select Post Offices.
