TOPEKA, Kan. – Five Kansas schools, including Broken Arrow Elementary School in Lawrence, were among 314 schools in the United States named by U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan as 2009 National Blue Ribbon Schools.
The National Blue Ribbon Schools award, one of the most prestigious education awards in the nation, distinguishes and honors schools for helping students achieve at very high levels.
Broken Arrow Elementary won the award because of a dramatic improvement with disadvantaged students - and placing in the top 10 on state tests.
The other Kansas schools recognized include Oakley Elementary School, Oakley; Phillipsburg Elementary School, Phillipsburg; Robinson Elementary School, Augusta ; and Rock Creek Junior/Senior High School, Rock Creek.
The schools will be honored at a National awards ceremony in Washington, DC in November.
