Police Investigate Ruskin Heights Homicide

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Police are investigating a homicide that happened in the Ruskin Heights neighborhood Wednesday afternoon.

Dispatchers received a call shortly before 4 p.m. on a report of a shots fired outside the Jefferson Place Apartments near 116th Street and Holiday Drive.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found a man, 20-year-old Maurice West of Kansas City, Mo., dead in the street. Shortly thereafter, police confirmed it was a homicide.

Detectives interviewed several witnesses in an attempt to locate the suspects. Witnesses near the crime scene on Holiday Drive said they saw West walking with another man when two men approached them on foot and shot West.

The suspects ran north on 116th Street. Police thought they were possibly in a house in the 6800 block of Longview Road.

Officers surrounded the house, and armored vehicles and more officers were called to the scene. After about an hour, the standoff ended. Four people inside the house came out, but they did not match the suspects’ descriptions.
