INDEPENDENCE, Mo.- Traditionally, Black Friday is known as the busiest shopping day of the year. For some retailers, the last Saturday before Christmas is even bigger.  Tiger Town Manager John Lundquist made sure they were ready.

"We're going to have everyone come in today. We're going to have all our staff today. We'll have big flows of people. Hopefully a good day."

Independence Shopping Center geared up for shoppers by opening their doors at 8 a.m. James Reed was one of the first shoppers to show up. He wanted to make sure he got the latest Michael Jordan tennis shoes.

"I came out early for sales and as everyone knows it is a "Jordan holiday." We have to be here as early as possible and be the first ones to get it because if you are late, they won't have your size," says Reed.

Reed also wanted to beat the crowds, which started growing very quickly a couple of hours later. To help with parking, the mall provided shuttle service from the Independence Event Center until 6 p.m.

They also gave away $50 gift cards to 30 shoppers from 2-4 p.m. Independence Police and mall security helped direct traffic on 39th street near the Independence Center.
