KANSAS CITY, Kan. – One person was killed and another was charged Tuesday morning in a three-vehicle accident on Interstate 70.

According to the Kansas State Highway Patrol, a 22-year-old Topeka man was driving at a high rate of speed on eastbound I-70. When he was near 110th Street just after 7 a.m., he veered left to avoid a van driven by 48-year-old David Laffere of Bonner Springs, but then hit a second car.

That second car hit Laffere’s van and all three vehicles went off the highway. Laffere was ejected and killed when his van rolled several times. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities closed one lane of eastbound traffic just east of 110th Street while they worked to clear the scene but traffic in both directions remained open.

The drivers of the other vehicles were not injured.

The second car was driven by 44-year-old Virgil Taylor of Tecumseh, Kan. The Topeka man could face charges in the case.
