KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Two separate car crashes claim two lives Saturday.

The first -- a crash early Saturday morning.

Shortly after 1:00 a.m. witnesses saw a car speeding northbound on Sterling when the driver lost control, left the road sideways before hitting two wooden utility poles

at the intersection of E. 43rd Street and Sterling Ave. That driver has been identified as Jason Teaney, 21, of Kansas City, Mo. The impact caused the pole to lean. Utility crews were called to the scene to help get it back upright.

Teaney was pronounced dead at the scene.

The second took place just after noon Saturday in rural Leavenworth County. There an elderly Kansas City, Kan., man was killed in a one-car accident.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reports Leodis Byers, 74, was killed when he lost control of his car as he was driving west on U.S. 24 Highway at 174th Street, near Basehor.

Byers’ car left the highway, and rolled over into a field on the south side of the road.  He was not wearing a seatbelt.
