The Cash for Clunkers program was geared toward trading in your old gas guzzlers, but national statistics show the new cars guzzle gas too.

Call for Action crunched the data and found local drivers fared a bit better than national trends.

The popular Cash for Clunkers program screeched to a halt at the end of August. Now, we have hard numbers on how the program fared.

Nationwide – drivers traded in their old F150 pickups for new one. In the metro, they skipped the pickups and went for more fuel efficient cars.

Ford Explorers, 4WD, AND Ford 150’s were the top trade-ins locally. Ford Focus’s and Hyundai Elantra’s were the top cars bought.

According to www.fueleconomy.gov, a 2009 Ford Focus receives 25 MPG for city traveling and 33 MPG for Highway. The Hyundai Elantra gets about the same with 26 MPG for city driving and 33 highway.

Also in the metro, car dealerships cashed in on the Cash for Clunkers Program. McCarthy Chevrolet in Olathe did the most deals in Kansas, followed by Thoroughbred Ford in Kansas City.

Missouri dealerships sold twice as many vehicles than Kansas with 14,415; Kansas had 7,400.
