According to the Missouri Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 7:30 p.m. when Bates tried to pass multiple vehicles on a two-lane section of U.S. 69 near Route D.

Lucas Bates and the driver of the third car, Robert Smallwood, of Plattsburg, were both seriously injured in the accident. Two people in the fourth vehicle were treated for minor injuries.

The investigation into the accident continues, with charges pending.
