KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A heavy snow is blanketing the metro, slowing the morning commute and leaving thousands of children home from school.
The NBC Action Weather center predicts 2-4 inches across the viewing area. The heaviest accumulation is expected in northeast Kansas and northwest Missouri. Meteorologist Jeremy Nelson predicts while most of the accumulation has stopped, snow flurries will likely continue through mid-afternoon.

Highways in Kansas City were near a standstill most of the morning as the the light fluffy snow covered the region.
Road conditions continued to be slick mid-morning and area authorities were urging drivers to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary.

Road crews are confident they will be able to keep the roads in drivable condition by spreading salt mixtures and plowing the roads constantly through the morning.
Most area schools have cancelled classes, but some districts on the Kansas side of the state line and north of the river in Kansas City, Mo., held classes as usual.
