KANSAS CITY, Kan. – A man credits his mother-in-law with saving him from a tree that was downed by a microburst Tuesday night.

The rare weather phenomenon happened about 8:20 p.m. over Kansas City, Kan., knocking at least one tree onto Mary Dickerson’s house and car.

That tree nearly came crashing down on three people standing in front of the home, including Dickerson's son-in-law and young granddaughter.

Just seconds before the tree fell, Mary called her son-in-law inside to grab a set of keys and move the car. The others followed him inside.

"I could've been dead, I was seconds away,” said Dickerson's son-in-law, Jonathan Bruce. “If she wouldn't have called me inside, I'd be standing there, my back was facing a tree. I wouldn't know. It would've fallen right on me."

Dickerson says Bruce rushed to get inside when he saw the tree tipping over.

“He nearly pushed my daughter over trying to get back inside before the tree split. It was unbelievable,” Dickerson said.

Luckily, there were no injuries related to storm damage reported on Tuesday. The wind did knock out power to about 1,000 KCP&L customers in the Mission and Roeland Park area.

Around 6 p.m. Tuesday, Liberty, Missouri was also hit by a microburst. The winds toppled trees and damaged the roofs of two apartment buildings near Interstate 35 and 152 Highway. No one was injured in the storm.
