Rain is spreading in this evening and thunderstorms are likely overnight. Then, scattered showers and thunderstorms may linger into Tuesday. And, this is after a record breaking cool wave just affected our beautiful July weekend. What is going on?
During the summer we often get a line of thunderstorms or a complex of thunderstorms. What is going on tonight is not like the usual summer "storm", but more like a winter or spring "storm system" that has organization and circulation.
This is going to be a longer duration rain event as this storm forms right over our heads. As this storm develops some locations could end up with excessive rainfall and flooding is the main threat later tonight into early Tuesday.
Some of our computer models have over 5 inches of rain forecast for our local area. This doesn't mean your house will have that much, but it is something we will be paying close attention to. We could end up with an inch of rain with no flooding, but some spots will likely get much more than this.
