KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A Kansas City tradition will light up Crown Center Square.

It's the annual lighting of the Mayor's Christmas Tree.

The ceremony starts at 5:30.  At 6:20pm actor and Kansas City native Eric Stonestreet will flip the switch to light the tree.

Volunteers with Project Warmth, Toys for Tots and Hooked on Books are there to collect donations of coats, toys, books or money.

The Mayor's Christmas Tree Fund has been helping Kansas City families for 131 years.

On Friday's Midday newscast, Mayor Mark Funkhouser explained how your donations are put to work.

"Some of the elderly, poor people, children and so forth. It helps them have a better Christmas. There are food cards handed out, you can go to price chopper and get food, there are holiday parties organized at the community centers for kids," said Funkhouser.

Also Friday night, cover charges at bars in the Power and Light district will be donated to the fund.
