Weather technology continues to improve in the broadcast industry. The NBC Action News Forecast Center has the best equipment available to television stations today. ESP:LIVE is our new radar tool that has five Nexrad radars and our own radar incorporated into it.

ESP:LIVE features a new approach to report on breaking weather. It enables the NBC Action Weather team to report on breaking weather while leaving the graphics and radar displays understandable to viewers. Now we can scan through and dissect thunderstorms with “X-Vision” and find the part of the thunderstorm where a tornado is occurring while we are on the air.

Last year on March 12, we found these spots and informed viewers where the tornadoes were located. With new tools like “snow vision” and “rain vision,” we can show you specific precipitation rates both where and when they are happening. ESP:LIVE is just another tool we have that helps us bring you the best severe weather information.

Weather Equipment & Weather Radios

NBC Action News has the best equipment available to television stations today. With its five NEXRAD radars, ESP: LIVE allows us to show storms in more detail than ever and even pinpoint a tornado’s location to the nearest block. We will dissect each thunderstorm and show you what is going on in and around it. Also, this spring we are installing brand-new, groundbreaking weather computers in the NBC Action News Forecast Center. This new technology will help us provide even more local detail and will only enhance our ability to bring you the most accurate, educational and timely weather information in Kansas City.

This year, we are teaming up with Price Chopper to provide weather radios to help keep you safe. It only costs around $30, and we highly recommend every home having at least one weather radio that will alert you to when severe weather is threatening your home, and then you can turn to NBC Action News for the best severe weather information.
