KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Missouri's next governor will be Democrat Jay Nixon, who has served 16 years as the state' s attorney general.
A crowd of supporters celebrated at the Pageant Theater in St. Louis.
The Associated Press called the race for Nixon just minutes after the polls closed, citing exit polls. And Nixon had been way ahead in opinion polls throughout the campaign against Republican Kenny Hulshof, a Mid-Missouri congressman.
But there's still a question as to whether Nixon's big victory will carry other, down ballot candidates into office on his coattails.
The Lt. Governor is likely to remain in Republican hands, as incumbent Peter Kinder is safely ahead.
