New charges filed in double slaying in SE Missouri

Last Update: 11/01 4:17 pm

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (AP) — Arson charges have been filed against the two men already charged with murder in the shooting deaths of a pregnant woman and her teenage son in southeast Missouri.

The Southeast Missourian reported that the arson charges were filed Friday against 28-year-old Ryan T. Patterson and 25-year-old Samuel R. "Ray Ray" Hughes.

Thirty-year-old Jamie Lynn Orman and her 15-year-old son, Derrick, were shot to death Tuesday morning in Cape Girardeau.

Court records say that Orman's boyfriend, John Lawrence, was the intended victim, but he hadn't yet returned home from work.

Investigators believe Lawrence's estranged wife, Michelle, asked Patterson to kill her husband and burn a home she owned with him so she could collect insurance.

The pair is accused of bringing a can of gasoline to the home, but no fire was set.
