TOPEKA, Kan. – Kansas Secretary of State Ron Thornburgh announced his resignation Monday, saying it will be effective Feb. 15.
“It has been a tremendous honor and privilege to serve my fellow Kansans as Secretary of State for the last 15 years,” Thornborg said in a prepared statement. “My family and I have been very blessed by this opportunity.
Thornburgh was first elected in 1994 and re-elected in 1998, 2002 and 2006. In his last two elections, he received the most votes of any statewide elected candidate.
“Thank you to the voters and my staff for making this experience possible,” he said. “I am very proud of my record and the many accomplishments throughout my years of public service.”
Thornburgh says he will join the private sector as the Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Olathe-based NIC, a provider of official government portals, online services and secure government payment processing solutions.
"The Kansas Republican Party is grateful to Ron Thornburgh for his many years of leadership and service to our party and state,” Kansas Republican Party Chair Amanda Adkins said Monday.
“Thanks to him, the Kansas Republican Party has a unified plan for victory in 2010,” Adkins continued. “We are committed to continuing the legacy of superb public service by Republicans in the Secretary of State Office.”-
Kansas Gov. Mark Parkinson will appoint a replacement to serve the remainder of Thornburgh’s term, which expires on Jan. 10, 2011.
