WICHITA, Kan. – The number of homeless veterans is growing in Kansas.

According to a report from the National Alliance to End Homelessness there were 712 homeless veterans in the state in 2008.  In 2007 there were 689.  That’s an increase from 2006 when the number was 601.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs helps compile the number of homeless vets.

About four percent of vets who seek care at the VA served in Iraq and Afghanistan.  They are mostly between the ages of 35 to 54.

The VA says they have a five year plan to decrease the number of homeless vets.
