Man Drowns in Perry Lake During Rescue Attempt

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) -- Jefferson County authorities say a man drowned in Perry Lake while trying to help a young girl who was struggling in the water.

Jefferson County Sheriff Jeff Herrig identified the man as Robert Courter, who was in his mid-20s and lived in the Nortonville area.

Herrig says Courter drowned Monday evening near the swim beach on the southeast side of Perry Lake.

He says Courter was trying to help the struggling girl and went under the water for eight to nine minutes before he was found.

The girl Courter was trying to help was unharmed.
