HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas farmer is trying to grow peanuts in a state known more for its wheat production.
Rice County farmer Clark Schmidt says his venture has likely caused some local gossip.
But he says everyone is watching to see if he is successful.
Schmidt also farms wheat, milo, soybeans and corn, and raises cattle in central Kansas.
Schmidt says he was inspired to try peanuts by the recent growth of cotton farming in Kansas. Experts say that peanuts generally fare well in areas where cotton thrives.
Schmidt said he isn't the first in the state to try peanuts, noting a few acres were planted several years ago in southwest Kansas.
