MANHATTAN, Kan. -- Fraternities at Kansas State University agreed to ban hard liquor from their houses next year.
The university's Intrafraternity Council approved the hard liquor ban this week. Only beer will be allowed in fraternity houses beginning January 1, 2010.
Kansas State officials did not play a part in the decision of the ban. The council and their fraternity members are self governing.
Council officials say the ban was being considered before a freshman student suffered alcohol poisoning in September. The student was found unresponsive at the Phi Delta Theta house off campus. The fraternity was put on probation until September 2011 for the incident and must pay several fines.
