Former Kansas Governor William Avery Dies

TOPEKA, Kan. – Former Kansas Governor William Avery has died.  He was 98-years old.

Avery, a Republican, served as Governor from 1965-66.  He also served 10 years as Congressman from the 2nd District before he became Governor.

He died on Wednesday.

Avery was born on August 11, 1911 in Wakefield, Kansas.  He attended the University of Kansas.  He served as a pilot in World War II.

He started out in politics as a local school board member in Wakefield.

Avery served in the statehouse from 1951-55.

Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
