Former Kansas Governor William Avery Dies

TOPEKA, Kan. – Former Kansas Governor William Avery has died.  He was 98-years old.

Avery, a Republican, served as Governor from 1965-66.  He also served 10 years as Congressman from the 2^nd District before he became Governor.

He died on Wednesday.

Avery was born on August 11, 1911 in Wakefield, Kansas.  He attended the University of Kansas.  He served as a pilot in World War II.

He started out in politics as a local school board member in Wakefield.

Avery served in the statehouse from 1951-55.

Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
