TOPEKA, Kan. -- Nearly 300 foreign inmates are being held in the state's prisons, according to Kansas Corrections officials.
Rep. Pat Colloton, a Leawood Republican, says deporting 100 to 200 of the inmates might give the state's economy a boost.
The state secretary of corrections told a legislative committee Tuesday that about 80 of the 293 inmates might be eligible for deportation under federal regulations.
Overall, 8,500 inmates are in the state's prison system.
State officials have not developed a broad deportation plan because there are questions about whether the Kansas felons would remain behind bars.
