OLATHE, Kan. - When a wanted fugitive got into a gun battle with FBI agents outside of an Olathe Subway restaurant, the high school senior behind the sandwich counter says insticts took over.
Around 7:15 p.m. Sunday, Ryan Meyers says he noticed two cars back into spots in the parking lot of the Subway where he works at 151st and Ridgeview Road.
"All of a sudden, I see two people get out of the cars and start shooting 12 to 15 gun shots," said Meyers. "So I ran and locked the doors and then got everyone in back and we sat tight until we heard knocking on the door which was the FBI agents."
Meyers said FBI officials instructed them to stay in the restaurant for two more hours while officials investigated the scene outside their door.
Officials say the shootout was between FBI agents and a 27-year-old man for whom members of the Violent Crimes Safe Streets Task Force had spent a month searching.
Officials with the Kansas City office of the FBI say the fugitive suffered critical injuries and was taken to an Overland Park hospital.
They are not releasing his name or why he was running from the law, only revealing he faces charges for aggravated assault.
As far as Olathe South High School senior Ryan Meyers was concerned, he says his instincts just took over.
"It was nerve-racking," said Meyers. "Nothing has ever happened like that before. I've never even heard gunfire before."
No one inside the Subway restaurant suffered injuries.
