KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A 25-year-old man who police say tried to strike them with his car was taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds Monday morning after leading officers on a chase through Kansas City. He was later charged in Jackson County.

John I. Battaglia of Kansas City, Mo., ran from a traffic stop at Anderson and Wheeling around 1:30 a.m., police said, and was able to return to his car, where he got in and tried to strike the officers.

Police fired shots at Battaglia, but he took off to Independence and Wilson, where police say officers again shot at Battaglia as he tried to strike them with his vehicle.

Battaglia continued a few more blocks on Independence Avenue until his car became disabled at Manchester, and he was taken into custody.

Police say Battaglia suffered non-life threatening injuries from apparent gunshot wounds.

No officers were injured during the chase.

Battaglia was charged Monday afternoon with armed criminal action and assault of a law enforcement officer. His bond was set at $250,000 cash.
