GARDNER, Kan. – A Gardner Police Officer was assaulted by a suspect early Saturday morning after leading them on a brief chase.

Police say they tried to pull over 25-year old Jeremy Valdez for a traffic violation around 2:20 a.m. when he suddenly took off.

Investigators say Valdez then crashed his car minutes later at the intersection of 175th St. and Hedge Rd., and then ran into a nearby corn field.

That is when police say Valdez hit the officer in the knee. He was arrested a short time later.

The officer did have to wear a brace on his knee, but is said to be ok.

Valdez is charged with aggravated assault, fleeing police and obstruction.

He remained in the Johnson County Jail early Saturday morning.
