KANSAS CITY, Mo. - An Independence woman is mourning the loss of her daughter and her unborn granddaughter, cruelly gunned down Friday evening.
Allison Thomas raised all three of her girls in the same Independence homes in which she still lives. The house sits in a cul-du-sac in a quiet neighborhood. When her daughter, Ashley Thomas, 25, decided to rent an apartment in the 1300 block of Armour Boulevard she was uncomfortable.
"I'd watch the news and there was always something (bad) within blocks of where she was at. She had a long time to go on her lease. We were kind of counting the days," said Thomas.
That count ended abruptly Friday.
Ashley Thomas and her boyfriend were shot while sitting in her car in front of her apartment complex. Paramedics immediately realized that Ashley was 8 months pregnant and rushed her to the hospital.
Ashley and her unborn child died. The child was due Dec. 15.
"She was going to be a little girl with a head full of hair," added Allison Thomas.
For security reasons, police are not releasing the boyfriend's name. He remains in critical condition at an area hospital.
Kansas City police have not made any arrests, but say they are actively following leads in the case.
