KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A police officer is on paid administrative leave after he was involved in a shooting Thursday evening.

Around 4:30 p.m., police were called to a reported shooting between two cars in the 5200 block of Scarritt.

When officers investigated, a witness gave police a specific description of one of the vehicles, including a dealership temporary tag.

Officers contacted the dealership about recently selling the model of the car. That information led police to Seventh and Spruce at about 6:45 p.m.

The suspect was wanted on two felony warrants so police surrounded the house, part of procedure when dealing with a violent felon, according to Officer Darin Snapp.

"The suspect actually agreed to come out and when he opened the door, he was carrying a shotgun," Snapp said. "He pointed it at one of the officers and that's when the officer fired a shot and hit him in the chest."

The 20-year-old suspect is at a local hospital with critical, but not life-threatening injuries.

The officer involved is on paid administrative leave.
