KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Cris Bottcher took care of humans in his job as a registered nurse.

It's how he treated dogs that got him into trouble.

Bottcher, 48, of Gilman City, Mo., pleaded Tuesday in U.S. District Court to his part in a conspiracy to promote and participate in dog fighting, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office in Kansas City.

The dog fights happened at Bottcher's house in February, April and May.

Bottcher owned 11 pit bull terriers now being cared for by the Humane Society, according to the news release.

The government is trying to take ownership of the dogs.

Bottcher worked as a registered nurse at a hospital in Bethany, Mo.
