PRAIRIE VILLAGE, Kan. - An 81-year-old man was pulled out of his car, beaten and robbed while waiting for his wife early Tuesday morning.
Police say just before 2 a.m., a man and his wife went to the Hy-Vee at 76th & State Line.
The man waited in the car, while his wife went inside.
Police say a woman approached, pulled the man out of his car and punched and kicked him while he was on the ground. She also took items from his pants, before leaving in a vehicle with at least one other person.
The man was treated at a hospital for his injuries.
Police say they were familiar with the victim and it wasn't unusual for the retired pair to be grocery shopping at 2:00 a.m.
"They say they like shopping then because it is quiet," said Lovett. Unfortunately, it wasn't quiet in the Hy-Vee parking lot Tuesday morning.
'It's very upsetting," said Capt. Wes Lovett with the Prairie Village Police Department. "But it is also not surprising that these suspects preyed on older victims and it's just a crime of opportunity. If the victim was a much younger person, I doubt they would have stopped to do what they did."
Lovett also said the woman drove around the lot two or three times, possibly to see how old the victim was.
The suspect is described as a black female, 35-40, about 5 foot 6, weighing 150 pounds and wearing dark clothing.
She fled in a four door maroon vehicle, possibly a 90s model Pontiac or Buick.
