KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A 24-year-old man was drunk and was under the influence of controlled substances when he struck a Kansas City Fire Department pumper head on.

The crash occurred around 4 a.m. on Aug. 29 in front of the pumper's station at 3211 Indiana Ave. Killed in the crash were Melinda Reliford, 32, and Crystal Lewis, 47. The driver and a third passenger were injured. No firefighters were hurt.

Kansas City police spokesman Darin Snapp said test results just returned showed the driver had a blood-alcohol content of .157, which is almost double the legal limit. He also had two controlled substances in his blood. Speed is also believed to have been a factor in the crash.

Charges are pending and expected very soon against the driver.
