KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Five firefighters were injured Saturday morning while fighting a vacant house fire.

Firefighters received a call at 9:51 a.m. of a fire at a two-story vacant house in the 400 block of Richmond. Crews were on the scene within three minutes, according to Kansas City, Kansas Fire PIO Assistant Chief Craig Duke.

Crews reported heavy fire and smoke coming from the house. Extra crews were sent to the scene due to the heavy fire and weather conditions (humidity and heat).

One firefighter suffered burns to the ears and was transported to a nearby hospital.

Firefighters were on the roof of the front porch fighting the fire on the second floor and attic when the porch roof collapsed. Three firefighters were injured, but their injuries are not life-threatening. Another firefighter received a head injury from the collapse. A total of five firefighters were injured and transported to a nearby hospital.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
