KANSAS CITY, Mo. – If you missed either of the first two events, there are still at least 4 more chances to recycle discarded electronics in our area.

All electronics collected at the events are handled by The Surplus Exchange, located in Kansas City, Mo.

The Surplus Exchange is certified to handle electronic waste. Their goal is to help keep these items out of area landfills.

They say cathode ray tubes found in most computer monitors and TVs contain significant amounts of lead. Other electronic equipment may contain mercury, cadmium, chromium and other heavy metals.

When electronic devices are disposed of, these pollutants may pose environmental risks.

Like the first two events, all of the remaining events are open to the public.

There are fees to recycle certain electronics. Desktop printers, fax machines and scanners are $5 each. Large printers and computer monitors are $10 each. For televisions, the fee is $10 for a 19-inch TV; $15 for a 20-inch TV; and $25 for a console TV.

There is no fee to recycle CPUs, keyboards, mice, personal printers, small fax/scanners, VCRs, stereos, cell phones, pagers, hand-held games and CD players.

If you can’t make it to an event, The Surplus Exchange will accept material at their facility located at 518 Santa Fe, Kansas City, Mo., or call (816) 472-0444.
