Indoor Plants Help with Air Quality in the Home

Last Update: 10/09/2009 5:14 pm
The EPA estimates that the quality of air inside our homes is 2 to 8 times worse than outside. But it can be helped greatly with tropical and indoor plants.

One local woman believes her house plants helped save her life.

Laurel has a 38 year old furnace and does not have a carbon monoxide detector in her basement.

One day, the gas company had to do some work on her street for a week and turned off her gas for a day. When they came back to turn on the gas for all the residents on the street, they wouldn’t turn on Laurel’s because it was that bad.

They told her she had a severe carbon monoxide leak, a crack in it, and probably had been like that for two or three years.

Laurel has about 35 house plants inside and was already feeling sick and did not know why. She believes that without them it would have been a lot worse.

Laurel says houseplants likely saved her life and you shouldn't be afraid to have some nice ones in your home.

Toby Tobin is encouraging everyone to not be afraid of having houseplants. There are so many tough, durable, pest free, maintenance free plants, and those are the best air cleaning plants too, so it should be a win-win.

Indoor plants are easy to grow with the right help.
