MISSION, Kan. – Parents are flocking to metro stores hoping to get their hands on the new hot toy for the 2009 holiday season.
Zhu Zhu Pets are toy hamsters that zoom around rooms and make 40 different sounds.
The toy is on the top of several toy lists for the holiday season. Kids love them.
“I've only recently started looking and I'm realizing that they are just not out there,” says Angie Bechard who is trying to a Zhu Zhu pet for her 8-year-old daughter.
Metro stores are selling the toys as fast as they can get them on the shelves.
Mark Stevenson, a manager at the Target Store in Mission, says the toys are gone 20 minutes after they get a shipment.
“Guests have been coming into the store at eight o'clock in the morning asking if we have shipments,” he says.
They are now limiting four sales per customer.
Parents who can’t find Zhu Zhu pets in stores are turning to the internet. On Ebay the furry pets are selling for $30 or more. They sell for about $7.99 in stores.
“I'm not willing to pay the extra money that they are wanting through the internet for them. So she'll probably have to do without this year,” says Bechard.
Zhu Zhu Pets are manufactured by Cepia which is based in St. Louis.
A company spokesman says they are working to produce as many as possible to help meet the demand.
