KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The number of people in need of emergency food assistance is growing in the metro.

According to “The Hunger in America 2010” report more than 295,000 people, including 109,000 thousand children, used Harvesters Food Bank last year.

The same report found nearly half of those who use harvesters also must make a difficult choice.

"If someone loses a job, or faces an unexpected medical bill, or the car breaks down, they could be put into a situation where they have to make a choice between do I buy food, do I pay utilities, do I pay the rent, pretty unacceptable," says Karen Haren who is the president of Harvesters.

Haren says the report also lets people see the usually unknown faces of hunger.
