KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A dab of sugar and a cuddle with mom may be the best pain relievers for newborn babies.
Brazilian researchers wanted to see which forms of pain relief worked best; a drop of sugar water on baby’s tongue, skin-to-skin contact with mom, or both.
They found the sugar water combined with hugs from mom seemed to calm babies much faster than either technique on its own.
Researchers used the babies’ facial expressions to gauge how they were feeling.
