KANSAS CITY, Mo. - New testing by The Illinois Public Interest Group (PIRG) shows high levels of lead and dangerous chemicals in some children's toys - even after new federal regulations went into effect in August.

The group tested toys from 4 different retailers. Out of 87 products tested, they found two toys that contained chemicals banned by the federal government and six that exceeded the amount of lead allowed by law.

PIRG officials said these are the first tests done on children's products since the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act required lowering the amount of lead in toys and other products by 50% by August 15.

PIRG Public Health Advocate Liz Hitchcock said the government should expand the number of chemicals it regulates in toys.

All of the group's test results are posted on HealthyStuff.org's Web site, http://www.healthystuff.org, a national database of more than 5,000 products tested for toxic chemicals.
