KANSAS CITY, Mo. – There are two types of diabetes, and the
American Diabetes Association is working to stop both through their new Stop Diabetes campaign.
With Type One diabetes, your body cannot make insulin.
Type Two diabetes means your body cannot process insulin properly. For decades, Type Two diabetes was also known as “Adult Onset” diabetes because it usually develops later in life.
However, children can have Type Two diabetes. It’s the more common type of diabetes, and experts fear it’s reaching epidemic proportions.
Experts say if Americans continue their current behaviors, one in three children will develop Type Two diabetes in their lifetime.
"People don't eat as a family anymore for dinner. People are running. The food choices have changed. Processed foods. All of that has contributed. Exercise is something that people have to now plan and schedule. It used to be part of life," says Dr. Virginia Peragallo-Dittko.
