As I typed the title of this blog, I accidently typed Go Red BetterUs. As my pinky searched out the backspace key, I stopped.
Better Us.
That works.
We're all trying to get more heart healthy...together.
Week 7 is about cholesterol.
What do we really know about cholesterol? Even after having reported on topics with the Heart Association for several years, I realized, there's a lot I don't know.
I know the L kind (LDL) is lousy and you want to keep it low and the H kind (HDL) is Happy and you want to keep it high. I know trans fats are bad. And I know Honey Nut Cheerios claims to lower cholesterol.
But what, exactly, is cholesterol?
According to the AHA, Cholesterol is a soft, fat-like, waxy substance found in the bloodstream and in all your body's cells. It's normal to have cholesterol. It's an important part of a healthy body because it's used for producing cell membranes and some hormones. But, too much cholesterol in the blood is a major risk for coronary heart disease (which can lead to heart disease) and for stroke.
I'm still learning, but after reading through week 7 of the Go Red BetterU program, I feel like I'm better prepared to be heart healthy.
There's much more in Week 7. The program is free and easy to sign up. Go to www.goredforwomen.org.
