With gloves, trash bags and the unbounded enthusiasm of youth, nearly 4,000 students from over 50 schools across the Kansas City metropolitan area will work to pick up the trash that litters local rivers, streams and green spaces starting on EARTH DAY, April 22, 2009 through May 22, 2009.
KC Cleans Streams is the only metropolitan-wide cleanup event with a focus on the rivers and streams running through the region’s communities. In its history, more than 20,000 students have participated in KC Clean Streams. The goal for each student is to pick up two bags of litter.
Teacher packets provided in advance of the event focus attention on non-point source pollutants, which are pollutants that come primarily from storm water runoff. Teachers talk with students about ways each of us can reduce pollution in our urban streams, including picking up pet waste, reducing fertilizer use and throwing trash in designated trash containers, instead of littering.
