LEE'S SUMMIT, Mo. - To ease the drain at the pump, the Missouri Department of Transportation has launched a web service to help residents use one of the most efficient ways to save money, carpooling.

Carpool Connections, located at www.modot.org/kansascity, will match you with fellow carpoolers anywhere in the state.

The service is easy, just click on "Find a Ride" and register with the carpool database. After answering a few questions you can contact existing carpoools or even start one.

There are also links to carpoooling groups in St. Louis, Jefferson City and Springfield.

MoDot says the service is another option for travellers. "We know people are looking for ways to conserve fuel and protect the environment. Helping them connect with other carpools  or start new ones is one way we can help," says MoDot Director Pete Rahn.

It is estimated the typical Missouri vehicle runs through nearly 600 gallons of fuel, and travels more than 16,000 miles each year.
