KANSAS CITY, Mo. - In order to save money on your energy bills, you typically have to spend money on home improvements.

But the Energy Smart program is trying to change that.

The pilot program is a joint effort between Kansas City Power & Light, Greater Kansas City LISC (Local Initiatives Support Corporation) and Blue Hills Community Services.  Through the partnership, KCP&L will fund up to $3,500 in improvements per home.  Services can include new insulation, new windows and doors, and heating and cooling system repairs.

A spokesperson for the program says families can save up to $350 dollars a year in energy costs by getting their homes weatherized.

An energy audit was performed Thursday at a home on Garfield.  The nine other homes will be audited over the next several days.  The improvements are expected to be completed by the fall.

The partnership hopes to expand the program to other homes early next year.  But at this point, applications aren't being accepted.
