KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- With this week’s heat and humidity, your air conditioner is likely working overtime.

The first blast of summer time temperatures keep A/C repairmen busy. In addition to yearly maintenance, there's something else to think about.

Come January 1st, the refrigerant used in a lot of air conditioners will be phased out.

It's called R-22. If you have an older air conditioner, it likely uses R-22 and you may want to start thinking about an upgrade.

Cecil Davis is the Operations Manager with Anthony Heating, Plumbing, & Cooling. He says upgrading now will save you costs in the long run.

"As the old R-22 is phased out more and more the price will go up. The cost will be more expensive for the refrigerant and probably service for the unit," says Davis.

To keep your A/C running its best this summer, check the filter. A clean one makes a big difference. Trim any bushes away from your air conditioner and listen for any odd noises.

Experts recommend a professional maintenance call at least once a year.
